Hunting Rain Gear

We may earn from gear links on this page. Odds never change because of it. How we earn

Sleet, wet snow and cold rain end more cold-weather hunts than the cold itself. Two waterproof Kryptek shells, from a packable pit-zip jacket to a heavier, quieter step up.

The Picks

Size your shell to fit over your insulated mid layer, not just a base layer.

Rain Jackets By Conditions

Match the jacket to the hunt.
ConditionsJacket typeWhy
Long hikes in, cold rain or sleetLight, packable shellBreathes better on the climb and packs away small when the sky clears.
Backpack hunts, every ounce countsMinimal hooded shellFewer features, less weight, still keeps rain out.
Wet days, lots of stop-and-goFull-featured shell with pit zips (Kryptek Jupiter)Pit zips dump heat on the climb without opening the front to the rain.
Wet snow on a long glassing sitShell over a synthetic mid layerThe shell blocks wind and melt; synthetic insulation keeps working if it gets damp.

The Shell Is One Piece of The System

A rain jacket only works as well as the layers under it. The cold-weather layering guide covers base layers, insulated mid layers and vests, and the high-country hunt fitness guide helps you climb without sweating through them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a rain jacket for a cold-weather elk hunt?

Yes. cold-weather hunts bring sleet, wet snow and cold rain, and getting soaked in the 30s is how hunts end early. A light waterproof shell also blocks wind over your insulation on an exposed glassing point.

2-layer or 3-layer rain jacket?

3-layer shells such as GORE-TEX jackets are usually more durable and breathe better on a hard climb. 2-layer shells can be lighter and cheaper. Both keep rain out when new.

Are pit zips worth it?

For stop-and-go elk hunting, yes. Pit zips let you vent heat on the climb without opening the front of the jacket to the rain, so you sweat less and stay warmer on the sit.
