How we grade

  • For each hunt we take last draw’s nonresident first-choice licenses drawn divided by nonresident first-choice applicants, all point levels combined. Hunts with fewer than 10 applicants are left out.
  • The grade uses the median hunt in that state and species: Hot is 50% or better, Fair is 15% to 49%, Tough is under 15%.
  • Texas drawings do not split residents and nonresidents, so Texas uses all applicants and drawn permits from the last-year block of the TPWD catalog (youth-only hunts left out).
  • Montana uses the nonresident permit pool. Wyoming combines the nonresident preference and random pools. Colorado uses the primary draw, point-only codes left out.
  • Points change your odds a lot. Use the points tool for odds at your level.
