How we picked

  • Reviews first. Every pick is chosen on review reputation: star ratings and review counts on the maker’s own page.
  • Value means value. The Best value pick is a well-reviewed rangefinder at a fair price, never cheap filler.
  • Dated prices. Each price comes from the maker’s page with the date we checked it. No price is shown if we could not confirm it.
  • No paid placements. We have no affiliate deal for these models, and every link goes straight to the maker.

How far you will shoot

Pronghorn live in wide open country and see a long way. Rifle hunters often crawl to somewhere between about 150 and 400 yards before a buck gets nervous, and the last 100 yards of a stalk can take an hour. Archery hunters sitting a stock tank or water hole usually shoot inside 50 yards.

Open sage fools the eye. With no trees for scale, a buck at 400 yards can look like 250. A quick laser reading before you settle in matters more on pronghorn than on almost any other Western big game.

Range early, before you crest the last rise, then again once you are set up. In heat shimmer or when the laser will not catch the animal, range a sage clump or fence post beside it.

When a ballistic model is worth it

A basic laser tells you the straight-line distance. Angle compensation (Vortex calls it HCD, Leupold calls it TBR) corrects that for shots up or down a slope. A ballistic model goes one step further and shows a hold or shoot-to range for your load.

The picks

Ballistic features need setup with your load before the hunt. Read the maker’s manual and confirm readings at the range.

Frequently asked questions

How far are most pronghorn shots in Wyoming?

It depends on the unit and how well a stalk goes. In open sage country many rifle shots land somewhere from about 150 to 400 yards, and archery hunters at water often shoot inside 50. Practice at the distances you expect, and pass on shots beyond your own range.

Do I need a ballistic rangefinder for antelope?

Not always. Inside about 300 yards most modern rifle loads shoot flat enough that a plain range is enough. Past that, a ballistic model that shows a hold or shoot-to range removes guesswork, which helps on a tag you waited years to draw.

Does angle compensation matter on flat ground?

Less than in the mountains. It earns its keep when you shoot across a draw, off a rim or up a cutbank, which is common in Wyoming breaks country.

Why is ranging a pronghorn hard?

A buck is a small, tan target on tan ground, often in heat shimmer at midday. If the laser will not catch the animal, range a sage clump or fence post next to it.

How did you pick these?

On review reputation: star ratings and review counts on each maker's own product page, checked Oct 24, 2026, across seven Vortex and Leupold models. Brands cannot buy a spot, and we have no affiliate deal for these models.
