How we picked
- Reviews first. Every pick is chosen on review reputation: star ratings and review counts on the maker’s own page, from any brand.
- Value means value. The Best value pick is a well-reviewed pack at a fair price, never cheap filler.
- Dated prices. Each price comes from the maker’s page with the date we checked it. No price is shown if we could not confirm it.
- No paid placements. We have no affiliate deal with these makers, and every link goes straight to the maker.

Frequently asked questions
What size pack do I need for a backcountry elk hunt?
For several nights in a wilderness unit, most hunters carry 4,500 to 6,000 cubic inches (about 75 to 100 liters). Day hunts from a base camp need far less. A frame that carries meat well matters more than raw volume.
Why does a hunting pack need a frame?
An elk quarter can weigh 50 to 90 pounds. A rigid frame and a good hip belt put that weight on your hips instead of your shoulders, which is what lets you walk it out of steep country.
What is a meat shelf or overload shelf?
A space between the frame and the bag where you can strap meat in game bags. It keeps the load tight to your back and lets you carry meat without packing it inside the bag.
How do I fit a hunting pack?
Match the frame to your torso length and the belt to your hips. Load it with 40 to 60 pounds and walk hills before the hunt. The high-country hunt fitness guide has a plan built around a loaded pack.
