When results post

FWP gives months, not days: elk and deer permits and nonresident combos mid-April; moose, sheep, goat and bison mid-May; deer and elk B licenses mid-June; antelope early August (per FWP’s 2026 dates). Exact 2027 days are unknown.

Where to check

Sign in to your FWP online account. FWP’s drawing statistics show how each district drew.

If you drew: plan it

  1. Claim or pay first. Montana resets bonus points only when you draw your first choice while using points, per FWP. Drawing a second choice keeps them.
  2. Read the hunt rules. Your unit or area regulations, legal weapon, dates and any mandatory check or report are on the FWP site and your license. Only FWP is official.
  3. Put the hunt on the calendar. Block the season dates, then work backward: scouting trips, travel, lodging and time off.
  4. Get the gear sorted. Start with the one piece below, then the full gear guides.

If you missed: bank points and catch the next window

  1. Check your points. Unsuccessful? Your bonus points carry forward, and you can buy one per year. Montana squares them (points squared, plus one chance). See Montana points explained.
  2. Look for second chances. FWP reports some licenses as surplus after a drawing. Check FWP for how and when surplus goes on sale.
  3. Line up next year. Montana draw odds and odds by points. Full calendar: draw deadlines.

The four words on results day

Drawn (successful)
You won a tag or permit. Most agencies make you pay or claim it by a deadline, or you lose it.
Unsuccessful
You did not draw. In point states this usually earns you a point for next year. Your fee rules depend on the state.
Leftover
Tags nobody drew or claimed. States sell or redraw them later. Points usually do not apply to them.
Preference / bonus points
Credit for past tries. Preference points put you in line ahead of people with fewer. Bonus points add chances in a random draw. Drawing your first choice usually resets them.
