What to Pack If You Draw a Moose or Caribou Tag

Plan for wet camps, travel delays and a much larger meat load than a typical deer hunt.

Pack This First

  1. Waterproof footwear chosen for the route, plus dry socks and camp footwear.
  2. A load-hauling frame or pack and enough breathable game bags.
  3. A knife, sharpening tool, gloves and a meat-cooling plan.
  4. Binoculars, rangefinder and a spotter where judging distance warrants it.
  5. Rain jacket and pants, insulation and dry base layers.
  6. Dry bags for the sleep system, food, electronics and spare clothing.
  7. A shelter and sleep system that can handle wind, wet ground and delays.
  8. Water treatment, cooking gear, food and reserve rations.
  9. Satellite communication, navigation, first aid and protected spare power.
  10. Permits, transport arrangements and a pack-out plan agreed with your partners.

Adjust For Your Hunt

Moose

A river or lake camp adds water crossings and heavy repeated carries. Decide how meat will be kept clean, cool and legal before the hunt. Hunt Information

Caribou

Tundra can be wet and exposed. Check transport, access and legal animal identification with current ADF&G information. Hunt Information

Gear For This List

Match the model, size and weather protection to your hunt. Check the current store price and availability before buying.

Before You Leave

Check current wildlife-agency regulations and your permit, confirm access and weather, test the kit with weight, and leave your route and return time with someone you trust. Pack emergency supplies for a delayed return.
