Alaska Mountain Goat Hunt Pack List

What to pack once you draw an Alaska mountain goat tag. Goat country is cliffs, wet rock and fast weather, so boots, poles and a stable pack come first.

Must-bring, in order

  1. Mountaineering boots, broken in. Stiff, waterproof boots made for side-hilling scree and shale. Boots are the first thing to fail on a mountain hunt, so break them in for weeks before the trip.
  2. 210x42 binoculars

Most sheep and goats are found by glassing, often miles away. A bright, steady 10x42 lets you pick apart basins all day without eye strain.

  3. 3Spotting scope and tripod

A spotter helps you judge a billy and plan a safe route before you climb. Horn length is hard to judge, so take your time behind good glass.

  4. 60 to 80 liter framed pack. Goat country rewards a pack that carries close and stable on steep rock. A real frame and hip belt matter more than saving a few ounces.
  5. Gore-Tex rain shell and pants. Alaska weather turns fast. A real waterproof shell and pants keep you hunting through days of rain and wind.
  6. Merino or synthetic base layers. No cotton. Pack more than one set so you always have something dry to sleep in.
  7. Bear spray / deterrent. Grizzlies live in nearly all Alaska sheep and goat country. Carry spray where you can reach it fast.
  8. Satellite messenger. An inReach-class two-way satellite messenger. Most Alaska hunting country has no cell signal, so carry a way to call for help and check weather.
  9. First aid kit with blister care. A compact kit plus blister care and trauma shears. Help can be a day or more away.
  10. 10Headlamp and spare batteries

Long days at both ends of the season mean walking and packing meat in the dark.

  11. Glacier glasses, brim hat and SPF 50. Snow and ice glare above timberline is hard on the eyes. Bring a hat and strong sunscreen too.

Nice to have

  1. Trekking poles. On wet rock and steep grass, poles are close to a must. They save knees and add balance with a loaded pack.
  2. Insulated parka. A warm puffy for long glassing sits in the wind and cold camp evenings.
  3. Spike bag and pad. A light bag and pad for nights away from base camp.
  4. 15Game bags and knife

Light breathable bags and a sharp knife for caping and boning out. Piranta-Edge is the primary caping knife; Flip N' Zip is optional.

  5. Water filter. Refill from creeks instead of hauling water. Treat everything; giardia is common.
  6. Laser rangefinder. Distances fool you in open Alaska country. Range before every shot.
  7. Repair kit and duct tape. Seam sealer, a needle, cord and tape fix packs, tents and boots far from town.
  8. Extra food day. Weather pins hunters in. Pack at least one spare day of food for every fly-out.

Goat vs sheep

Goat hunters lean harder on boots, poles and a pack that rides stable on cliffs. Many goat hunts run from a lodge, boat or guide camp, so the spike bag and pad are often optional. Bear spray and a satellite messenger matter just as much. Nonresidents need a guide or a qualified resident relative for mountain goat. Sharing the trip with a sheep tag?
