Alaska Draw: Before You Apply

Alaska's draw application period opens Nov 1 and closes Dec 15. Before you pick hunts, think through the trip, not just the tag.

What to research first

  • Glass. Alaska hunts are won glassing big country. Know what binocular and spotting setup you will carry before you choose a sheep or goat hunt.
  • Boots and miles. Sheep and goat country is steep, wet and loose. Pick hunts that match the boots and fitness you have.
  • Travel and logistics. Many hunts need a flight in, a transporter or a guide (nonresidents need a guide for sheep, goat and brown bear). Price that before you apply.
  • Meat care. Moose and caribou mean a lot of meat to pack and keep cool. Plan for game bags and a way out.
