Safety Equipment For Your Hunt

Pack for a late return, a soaked layer and a lost phone signal—not just the hunt you expect.

A Way To Call For Help

A Garmin inReach or another satellite communicator can help outside cell coverage, but it needs a compatible service plan, a clear view of the sky and a practiced user. Set it up and test normal messaging before the trip. Leave your route and return time with someone at home. An SOS button is not a substitute for shelter, navigation or sound decisions.

Safe Drinking Water

Carry enough water for the route plus a delay, and know where you can refill. Sawyer, LifeStraw and Katadyn make different filters and treatment products: check the exact model’s organism claims and follow its cleaning instructions. Many filters do not remove viruses or dissolved chemicals. Protect hollow-fiber filters from freezing after use and carry a backup treatment appropriate to the source.

First Aid You Know How To Use

Bring personal medication, blister care, gloves, dressings and supplies matched to your training and distance from help. A compact commercial kit is a starting point; learn what is inside it before leaving home. Check expiration dates and waterproof the kit. Training matters more than a long list of unfamiliar equipment.

Headlamp, Backup Light & Extra Power

A headlamp keeps both hands free. Pack a separate backup light rather than relying on the phone you also need for maps. Carry compatible spare batteries or a charged power bank and cable; store batteries safely with terminals protected. Cold shortens useful battery life, so keep reserves dry and insulated. Test both lights before the walk in.

Fire Starting, Shelter & Navigation

Carry weather-protected ignition and reliable tinder where fires are legal. Know local restrictions and never depend on finding dry fuel. Add an emergency shelter, warm dry layer, map and compass, food and a whistle. Practice navigation away from the trail; saved offline maps are useful but electronics can fail. Fire is a backup tool, not a guaranteed rescue plan.
