If you drew: plan it

  1. Claim or pay first. Claim your permit online within 10 days, per TPWD. Unclaimed permits are forfeited. Then read the hunt's rules and site details in your permit email.
  2. Read the hunt rules. Your unit or area regulations, legal weapon, dates and any mandatory check or report are on the TPWD site and your license. Only TPWD is official.
  3. Put the hunt on the calendar. Block the season dates, then work backward: scouting trips, travel, lodging and time off.
  4. Get the gear sorted. Start with the one piece below, then the full gear guides.

If you missed: bank points and catch the next window

  1. Check your points. Not drawn? In categories that use them, you build loyalty points (TPWD’s name for preference points). See our loyalty points model.
  2. Look for second chances. TPWD runs a Secondary Draw and offers standby permits for some hunts. Rules are on TPWD’s Secondary Draw & Standby Permits page, linked from the drawn hunts page.

The four words on results day

Drawn (successful)
You won a tag or permit. Most agencies make you pay or claim it by a deadline, or you lose it.
Unsuccessful
You did not draw. In point states this usually earns you a point for next year. Your fee rules depend on the state.
Leftover
Tags nobody drew or claimed. States sell or redraw them later. Points usually do not apply to them.
Preference / bonus points
Credit for past tries. Preference points put you in line ahead of people with fewer. Bonus points add chances in a random draw. Drawing your first choice usually resets them.
