We may earn from gear links on this page. Odds never change because of it. How we earn

The whitetail rut peaks across most of Texas from early November into December. Here is the gear that matters for long sits, by category, with a top, mid and budget pick.

Calls

Grunt tube, rattle bag or antlers, and a can bleat cover the seeking and chasing phases. Call soft first; most bucks come in quiet.

No partner pick yet that we would stand behind here. We will add one once we have it.

Scent control

Play the wind first. Scent spray and carbon-lined layers buy you margin when it swirls on stand.

Trail cameras

Cellular cams on scrapes and travel corridors show when bucks start moving in daylight, without bumping the area.

Stands and saddles

Hang sets near pinch points between bedding and doe groups. A full-body harness on every climb, every time.

No partner pick yet that we would stand behind here. We will add one once we have it.

Cold-weather layers

Rut sits are long and still. Pack the insulation in, then layer up on stand so you are not sweating scent.

Last light is when bucks show. Good optics and a rangefinder let you judge and range fast.
