Texas Fall Turkey Hunt Pack List

Fall Texas turkey is a find-the-flock hunt, not a spring gobbler sit. Glass open country until you locate birds, then work the roost to feed pattern with soft calling and a hen decoy only. More walking and glassing than sitting. Pack light, stay dry through October fronts, and carry steel #4 to #6 where nontoxic is required.

Legal

Texas legal box (2026-27 TPWD). Gobblers and bearded hens only. Unbearded hens are illegal statewide. A hen decoy is an attractant, not a harvest: never shoot an unbearded hen. Matagorda and Wharton counties are closed. 4-bird annual limit, report within 24 hours, Upland Game Bird Endorsement required. Seasons and open counties differ by zone, so check your county with TPWD before you hunt.

The pack, item by item

We don't link shotguns or shells. Pattern a 12ga IC with your steel #4 to #6 load, carry two boxes, and confirm nontoxic rules on your unit with TPWD.

  1. 1. 12ga shotgun, 26–28" barrel, IC choke

Fall flocks flush and regroup at longer, messier ranges than a spring strut zone. A 12ga with a 26–28" barrel and improved-cylinder choke gives a usable pattern when birds are moving through brush edges and open pasture.

Texas note: Match choke to your steel #4–#6; tighter chokes can blow patterns with steel.

  2. 2. #4–#6 steel shot, 2+ boxes

Many Texas public and waterfowl-adjacent spots require nontoxic shot. Steel #4–#6 hits hard enough on turkey at ethical ranges without lead risk.

Texas note: Confirm nontoxic rules on the unit you hunt; when in doubt, shoot steel.

  3. 3. Camo head-to-toe + face mask + gloves

Fall flocks have many eyes. Hands and face flash first when you raise the gun or glass.

Texas note: Match vegetation, early-fall green vs late-fall brown pasture.

  4. 4. 8x42 binoculars

Fall Texas turkey is walk-and-glass. You find flocks before you ever call.

Texas note: Glass from high ground and fence lines at first light; flocks leave roost toward feed.

  5. 5. Box call + slate

Soft yelps and clucks keep contact as the flock moves roost to feed. A box call carries; a slate is quieter for close work.

Texas note: Fall = soft and sparse. Do not hammer like spring gobbler hunting.

  6. 6. Hen decoy ONLY (no jake)

A single hen looks like a safe add-on. A jake can push fall birds off.

Texas note: use a hen only, no jake, on fall Texas hunts.

  7. 7. Waterproof ankle boots

October dew, creek crossings, and wet pasture soak low boots fast. Waterproof ankle boots keep you walking the glass-and-move loop without cold feet ending the morning.

Texas note: Ankle height is enough for pasture; save heavy mountain boots for elsewhere.

  8. 8. Rain shell (Oct fronts)

Texas October fronts stack cold rain on open country. A packable rain shell keeps you hunting through the front instead of quitting when birds are still moving.

Texas note: Fronts can drop temps 20°F; shell + insulated layer below.

  9. 9. Insulated layer (mornings in the 40s)

Pre-dawn roost checks start in the 40s even when afternoon hits the 70s. A light insulated layer under the shell lets you sit still at first light without shivering through glass time.

Texas note: Strip it when you start walking; re-layer on the next sit.

  10. 10. Merino / synthetic base layers (multi)

You sweat on the walk between flocks and chill on the next sit. Multiple merino or synthetic bases let you rotate damp layers so the next glass session stays warm.

Texas note: Pack a dry spare in a zip bag inside the day pack.

  11. 11. 20–30L day pack

Decoy, calls, layers, water, and a shell, not a mountain load. A 20–30L pack keeps hands free for the gun and glass while you cover ground.

Texas note: Size for hen decoy + shell + 2L water without bouncing.

  12. 12. Rangefinder

Open-country fall shots look closer than they are. A rangefinder stops you from stretching steel past a clean pattern and helps you set the hen decoy at a known kill distance.

Texas note: Range the decoy setup and the far fence line before birds arrive.

  13. 13. Headlamp with red filter

A red filter lets you walk in without blowing birds off the limb.

Texas note: Spare battery in the pack; cold mornings kill charge.

  14. 14. First aid + tick / chigger meds

Fall Texas pasture means ticks, chiggers, and thorn scrapes. A small first aid kit plus tick/chigger treatment keeps a bad itch or cut from ending a multi-day trip.

Texas note: Treat cuffs and boot tops; check at mid-day and camp.

  15. 15. Water, snacks, sunscreen

Fall turkey is miles of glass-and-walk, not a blind sit. Water, snacks, and sunscreen keep you covering country through the warm afternoon when flocks hit feed again.

Texas note: 2L minimum on warm October afternoons; SPF on neck and hands.
