The pack, item by item

  1. 1. 10x42 binoculars (or 8x42 for timber)

Montana deer are found with glass, not by walking into them. Sit high, glass long, and let the bins find bedded bucks before you move. 10x42 reaches across open country; 8x42 is brighter in timber and bottoms at last light. Prairie breaks and Missouri River country favor 10x42; river-bottom whitetail and timber can go 8x42.

  2. 2. Laser rangefinder

Open-country shots are where misses happen. A rangefinder takes the guess out of the shot and helps you plan a stalk to a distance you're confident at, rifle or bow. Breaks coulees hide real distance. Range the far side before you move.

  3. 3. Headlamp (red mode)

You hike in and out in the dark. Red mode gets you to a glassing knob without lighting up the hillside; white mode handles blood trails and field dressing. Carry spare batteries; cold drains them fast.

  4. 4. Sunglasses

Glare off snow and pale ground tires your eyes over a long day of glassing. Good sunglasses keep you sharp between glassing sessions. Snow glare on late-season hunts hits hard on open ground.

  5. 5. Trekking poles (optional)

Steep sidehills, loose rock and a loaded pack out are easier on two poles. Poles save knees on the descent with meat. Collapse and stow them for the final stalk.

  6. 6. Spotting scope and tripod (optional)

Bins find deer; a spotter tells you if the buck is worth the stalk. Judge the buck from the knob instead of walking miles to look at a small one.

  7. 7. Bear Keg food-storage canister (grizzly-overlap districts only)

Only for grizzly-overlap districts in northwest Montana and Greater Yellowstone. A hard-sided canister keeps camp food and scent locked away from bears overnight. Not a core item on prairie or eastern units; skip it there.

Camo for mule deer country

Mule deer pick out movement and odd shapes against open slopes. Muted earth tones break you up against rock, sage and dry grass while you glass and stalk.
