Start With The Generation and The Night Flash
Moultrie’s EDGE names are easy to mix up. The original EDGE PRO is not the EDGE 2 PRO, and neither is the EDGE 3 PRO. Read the model and SKU before comparing prices. Retailer listings may say “EDGE Pro 2”; Moultrie identifies SKU MMC-14125 as EDGE 2 PRO.
These are feature-based picks, not a side-by-side field-test ranking. Moultrie is our second featured trail-camera brand alongside Tactacam. The best choice for a property depends on coverage, camera count, flash preference and how often you can service the installation.
The EDGE Lineup At A Glance
| Camera / SKU | Photo output | Video | Trigger | Max detection | IR flash | OP price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| EDGE 2 · MMC-14123 | 36MP | 1080p | 0.40 sec | 100 ft | Low-glow | $109.99 |
| EDGE 2 PRO · MMC-14125 | 40MP | 1440p | 0.30 sec | 100 ft | No-glow | $99.99 |
| EDGE PRO · MCG-14080 | 36MP | 1080p | 0.50 sec | 100 ft | Not specified in cited page | $179.99 |
| EDGE 3 · MMC-14202 | 40MP | 1080p | 0.50 sec | 100 ft | Low-glow | $121.49 |
| EDGE 3 PRO · MMC-14204 | 50MP | 1440p | 0.30 sec | 100 ft | No-glow | $169.99 |
| EDGE 4 · MMC-14227 | 40MP | 1080p | 0.40 sec | 100 ft | Low-glow | $129.99 |
| EDGE 4 Solar · MMC-14269 | 40MP | 1080p | 0.40 sec | 100 ft | Low-glow | $183.49 |
Moultrie lists 100-foot maximum detection and flash range for these models in the cited publications. That does not guarantee an identifiable animal at 100 feet under every combination of weather, angle, vegetation and illumination. Trigger ratings are camera response times, not the time a cellular image takes to reach your phone.
The old PRO page calls its resolution 36MP, but we do not infer native sensor measurements for the other models from marketing megapixels. Larger photo-output numbers do not by themselves establish more usable detail. Manufacturer figures are not a substitute for a controlled image-quality comparison.
Which EDGE Makes Sense For Your Location?
EDGE 2: the straightforward older-generation option
The manufacturer identifies MMC-14123 as EDGE 2. Its series comparison lists 36MP photos, 1080p video, a 0.40-second trigger and low-glow flash. Built-in memory avoids a routine SD-card purchase. Choose it when you are adding to an existing installation and the actual price is compelling; at this shelf’s $109.99, compare it with the $129.99 EDGE 4 before buying.
EDGE 2 PRO: do not confuse it with original PRO
MMC-14125 is the EDGE 2 PRO, with 40MP output, 1440p video, a 0.30-second trigger and no-glow flash in the manufacturer’s generation comparison. The $99.99 OpticsPlanet listing makes it a price-led no-glow candidate, subject to the exact listing and stock at purchase. The support guide specifies 8 or 16 AA batteries, with eight batteries filling one side of the tray—not scattered across both sides.
Original EDGE PRO: relevant mainly to existing owners
The original PRO lists 36MP, 1080p video, a 0.50-second trigger, Live Aim, Smart Capture and Smart Zones. It is a different camera from the EDGE 2 PRO. At this shelf’s $179.99 price, its older-generation position is hard to justify as a new purchase over lower-priced alternatives unless a particular feature or existing setup makes it worthwhile. Manufacturer-direct stock is not the same as retailer stock; the buy card reflects the OpticsPlanet listing.
EDGE 3: app-guided setup and low-glow scouting
EDGE 3 adds the manufacturer’s Moultrie AI workflow, GPS and Live Aim to a 40MP / 1080p low-glow camera. Its 0.50-second trigger is slower on the published specification than EDGE 2’s 0.40 seconds: a higher generation number does not mean every individual metric rises. At $121.49, it is close enough to EDGE 4 that the newer model deserves a look.
EDGE 3 PRO: the no-glow step
The PRO version lists 50MP photos, 1440p video, a 0.30-second trigger and no-glow flash. Its product specification also lists an included Easy Aim Mount. Choose it when no-glow and higher video output matter more than an integrated solar configuration. Check the retailer’s exact package: an accessory included with the camera is not something to buy twice.
EDGE 4: the everyday current-generation choice
EDGE 4 lists 40MP photos, 1080p video and a 0.40-second trigger, with IP67 waterproof construction, GPS, Live Aim and Buck Shot. Its separate solar attachment can convert the standard camera to an integrated-solar arrangement, but that attachment is sold separately. The basic camera is not the same package as EDGE 4 Solar.
EDGE 4 Solar: convenience with a placement requirement
The Solar model retains 40MP / 1080p imaging, a 0.40-second trigger and low-glow flash. The manufacturer lists a built-in solar panel, rechargeable lithium battery, Easy Aim Mount, strap and mounting plate in the box. It is a logical fit where you have useful sun and inconvenient access. It is not an excuse to ignore shade, weather, image traffic or initial charging.

The Moultrie App: Plans Before Camera Count
| Plan | Monthly billing | Annual billing | Included photos / videos |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | $9.99 per camera | $107.88 per camera | 1,000 images / 10 videos monthly |
| Unlimited | $16.99 per camera | $155.88 per camera | Unlimited images / 50 videos monthly |
| Pro Series: first camera | $34.99 | $275.88 | Unlimited images / 50 videos monthly |
| Pro Series: each additional | $7.99 | $95.88 | Unlimited images / 50 videos monthly |
The manufacturer’s public plan calculator also displays $8.99 / $12.99 / $22.99 monthly-equivalent figures for the first-camera tiers. Those are rounded annual-billing equivalents, not the monthly subscription prices above: $107.88 ÷ 12 is $8.99. Choose the billing cycle deliberately and confirm the account total in the app.
For four cameras on monthly Unlimited, the published base total is $67.96. Monthly Pro Series is $34.99 + three × $7.99 = $58.96. For two cameras, monthly Unlimited is $33.98 versus $42.98 on Pro Series. Camera count changes which tier makes economic sense; the cheapest advertised additional-camera rate is not the whole bill.
The app provides galleries, camera sharing, Smart Tags and activity tools, with advanced mapping and hunt-planning features depending on the plan. Connected cameras require a paid subscription even though downloading the app can be free. Video allowances, high-resolution delivery and on-demand features deserve a check before you activate a busy location.
Live Aim is a setup aid: it helps you frame a camera while you are there. Do not confuse its name with continuous, remotely streamed live video. The cited EDGE pages describe on-demand photos and video, which is not the same thing as a permanent live feed.
POWER MAG and Solar: Powering Is Not Always Recharging
| Pack | Capacity | Charging | Compatibility distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| POWER MAG II | 3,350mAh / 36.18Wh | USB-C / USB Power Delivery | Powers all EDGE; recharge feature Gen 3+ |
| POWER MAG III | 5,000mAh / 54Wh | USB-C | Manufacturer lists all EDGE cameras |
| POWER MAG II Plus | See exact manufacturer package | USB-C fast charging | Manufacturer lists all EDGE cameras |
The POWER MAG II specification contains an important qualification: all EDGE cameras are supported as powered devices, but the recharge feature is supported on Gen 3 and later cameras. Compatibility as a battery is not permission to assume identical in-camera solar charging on an older EDGE 2. Confirm the complete camera/pack/panel combination before building an unattended setup.
POWER MAG III lists 5,000mAh at 10.8V, or 54Wh. Comparing mAh alone with a pack at another voltage can mislead; watt-hours are the more useful energy comparison. The manufacturer lists a four-hour full-charge time, but the required charger and conditions still matter. No guaranteed number of weeks in the field is claimed here.
A working solar system needs a compatible battery, cable and panel, plus exposure to useful sunlight. Match the connector and battery type to the exact camera generation.

Buy Aim Adjustment Before Buying Another Camera
A strap is sufficient for many trees. An Easy Aim Mount or Flex Mount can help point the camera at the actual crossing rather than a convenient trunk angle. A stake solves the lack-of-a-tree problem, subject to landowner and land-manager permission. Check for movement and vegetation in the frame after installation.
The security box must fit the exact camera housing. A metal box is a theft deterrent, not a recovery guarantee. A strap two-pack is two straps, not two cameras, and a camera-power panel is not a feeder accessory.

Use The Package List, Not Just The Bundle Headline
The EDGE 4 two-pack is listed at $259.99; two $129.99 singles total $259.98. At this snapshot there is no price saving, so choose on package contents and availability rather than assuming the two-pack is discounted. The retailer photo shows one complete camera; the product card explicitly identifies two cameras per pack.
The EDGE 3 two-pack and EDGE 3 plus solar package are currently out of stock at OpticsPlanet. Their prices are not evidence that an individual in-stock camera is overpriced: bundles can have different availability and promotions. Every activated cellular camera still needs its own plan.

Getting A Useful First Transmission
- Activate the exact camera and plan at home, then send a test image.
- Check coverage again at the final location. Moultrie warns that a phone can roam onto a tower unavailable to a cellular camera.
- Use the correct full battery-tray configuration or compatible pack. Do not mix battery ages or brands.
- Frame the crossing, take a walk test and confirm the upload in the app.
- Review sensitivity, burst and image traffic after the first day rather than assuming the defaults fit every site.
Does EDGE 2 PRO mean the same thing as EDGE PRO?
No. MMC-14125 is EDGE 2 PRO. The original EDGE PRO is a separate older camera with a different specification set. Use the SKU, not just the word PRO.
Do I need to buy an SD card?
The cited EDGE cameras use built-in memory. That does not remove the need to check connectivity and app storage or download behavior for your plan.
Will POWER MAG II recharge inside an EDGE 2?
The manufacturer says the pack powers all EDGE cameras but specifically limits its recharge feature to Gen 3 and later. Do not assume older-generation in-camera charging.
Does a free app mean free cellular use?
No. Moultrie explicitly requires a paid subscription for connected devices. Camera service is separate from simply installing the app.
